Best for Sustainable Investing 2022

9 Feb, 2022

Readers, contain your excitement as we welcome you to the digital red carpet of the glamorous UK investment and pension scene. The following providers get the Boring Money Best for Sustainable Investing award for 2022 and are listed in diplomatic alphabetical order below.

We scrutinised the level of information, support and content available to help those who want to invest sustainably. Winners offer easy to access ready-made bundles of investments, or have excellent content and filters to help consumers find decent sustainable investments and funds.

These independent awards are compiled using customer reviews (30% of the score), Boring Money’s rigorous behind the scenes testing using our live accounts, charges (25% of the score) and customer service including call centres and support. These awards take our research team of 6 analysts over 2 months to research and collate, and recognise all round excellence. In our opinion – and their customers’ opinion - these providers are the best for sustainable investing in the UK today for those investing without an adviser.

More information about the awards

Why did we come up with these awards and the Best for Sustainable Investing category?

The financial sector is not known for being very transparent when it comes to sustainability, or ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance), which has become the (ill-inspired) jargon acronym for this arena in recent years. One of the problems is that there isn't a universal set of standards to guide you through what an 'ethical' product should actually look like and how you can scrutinise providers that claim to be 'sustainable' but may be heavily invested in fossil fuels, for example.

That means a lot of other 'sustainability' awards out there tend to mean very little! This makes it easier for some providers to do what's known as 'greenwashing'- marketing their products as 'ethical' or 'sustainable' when they're actually tied to dodgy CEOs, coal mines, or very unscrupulous labour practices. Sadly, this makes it a lot harder for sustainable savers like you to compare providers, understand what's right for your needs, and invest ethically with your cash. In response to the above, we created the Boring Money Best For Sustainable Investing award to honour those providers who are making some strides to building a better world, for example, by divesting from fossil fuels and supporting projects to help combat climate change.

And how does this information help me as a sustainable investor?

We didn't just come up with these awards to brag about these providers. That's just plain boring! No - these awards exist to help you - the customer - make better financial decisions for yourself and your loved ones, while ensuring your money goes to good causes too. Whether you're planning on opening a new sustainable ISA, a greener pension pot or switching to an ethical robo portfolio, we've done all that nitty gritty research and fiddly analysis so you don't have to.

And - rest assured - we know just how sick and tired you are of those companies that fail to 'walk the talk' when it comes to their 'sustainability' claims. But take note: to be included in our Best for Sustainable Investing awards, these providers have had to prove they're doing some *reasonably* heavy lifting in this area. And while we could all be doing a bit more to help the environment - these ones are a good starting point for sustainable investing in 2022. Empty claims like 'we care about the environment' or 'sustainability is important to us' definitely won't make the grade.
