Should long-term investors stick with shares during market volatility?

09 April 2026

Question by Boring Money reader

Being a long-term investor, I prefer shares. Should I change this long-held view?

Answered by Holly Mackay

This is quite a quick one to answer. No! Shares are your way of participating in capitalism and innovation, and will maximise your long-term wealth creation — even with temporary blips as the world goes mad. We always worry that this time it's different. And markets always come back.

I’ve worked in investment markets for over 20 years. I started out at Merrill Lynch Investment Management and worked at a few big names before setting up my first business in 2008.
