How do I find out what I owe and who I owe?

Question by John

I have a brain injury from a motorcycle accident. How do I find out what I owe and who I owe?

Hi John,

Sorry to hear about your accident - I hope that you are recovering well.

You may be able to find out who you owe money to by checking your credit report from a company such as Experian or Equifax - both of which offer a free trial which needs to be cancelled within 28 days to avoid being charged a monthly fee. Most regulated debts (mortgages, loans, credit cards etc.) should show on your report, which will give you a starting point.

You may also want to check your bank statements to see if you are making regular payments to anyone, and look at home for card statements.

The Charity Headway https://www.headway.org.uk/ might be able to help you with some of the practical steps this involves, and act on your behalf if you need to send emails or make calls to get your affairs in order. They have a free helpline who may be able to offer other solutions 0808 800 2244.

I hope that this helps

Claire
