Is the S&P a wise place to be in during 2022?

18 January 2022

Question by Duncan

Hi, I've recently paid £10,000 into a stocks and shares ISA with Vanguard, their VWRL.
Am wanting to purchase another stocks and shares ISA in the new tax year and am thinking of buying Vanguards S&P 500 - is the S&P a wise place to be in during 2022?

Hi Duncan,

That is the million dollar question!

Nobody can accurately predict how the S&P 500 (nor any other investment) will perform over a given time period. And if anyone tells you otherwise, you should run a mile!

The S&P 500 was up 4.5% in the month to 31 December 2021.

However that is not the important number. The important number is that it is up 10.2% per year over the last 30 years.

If you are investing for the long term, then it has proven to be a good place to put your money.

I hope that helps!

Josh
