Can you invest in crypto with a UK pension?

26 November 2024

Question by James

Hi,

Do you have any knowledge of UK pension providers that allow for investments in cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin? Any information or guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards,

James

Hi there,

You cannot buy cryptocurrency in a SIPP (personal pension) due to FCA regulations in the UK. This is because HMRC does not consider cryptoassets to be currency or money. You can read more about the government's rules on this here.

The only way to get exposure is to invest in crypto ETFs, crypto-related stocks, or crypto-mining companies, if you believe they'll act as a proxy for actually investing in crypto directly.

Hope this is helpful!
