Top of the Pops: popular investment trusts across all 4 providers. This article brings you the most-bought trusts on each of the major investment platforms in May 2023. If you can’t face reading through it all, we start with the most popular products across the board.
Top Investment Trusts across all 4 platforms are: Scottish Mortgage, City of London, Fidelity European Trust, F&C and JPMorgan Global Growth & Income
Scottish Mortgage and City of London could not be more different. Scottish Mortgage has fallen from grace in the eyes of some, with huge falls as the tech-heavy portfolio struggled in unforgiving markets in 2022 particularly. Its performance chart looks like Mount Everest over the last 5 years, and we’re well down the other side of the peak. However supporters say it’s still up 36% over the last 5 years and has a portfolio of interesting companies, selected by proven asset managers and all managed at a decent ongoing fee of 0.32% (OCF or Ongoing Charges Figure).
By contrast City of London holds ‘old school’ stuff – banks, tobacco firms, oil companies, Unilever – but has posted great returns over the last 3 years (44%) and is also managed by a group with a pedigree as old as Father Time (in investment terms) at a low fee. One for people who think that there will always be a market for firms which make things like soap, drinks, money and fags!? Not one for sustainable warriors…
