Where can we go to invest our only savings so at least we are not losing continually?

Question by Michael

My wife and I have £70,000 with a Standard Life portfolio. The management charges are reducing the capital continuously. Where can we go to invest our only savings so at least we are not losing continually? The account is in S&S ISA.

Hi Michael,

If you are "losing continually" then it sounds like the charges are too high and the performance is too low.

However, I would assume that you have put your £70,000 into a Stocks & Shares ISA as you are hoping for long term growth rather than just low charges.

Therefore, as well as looking for reasonable charges, you also need to think about the types of investments that your money is in.

For example, you could put your money in a zero cost bank account and earn 0.5% interest.

Or you could invest in funds charging 0.1% - 2% per year and providing far superior returns (but also carrying more volatility).

You could use the Boring Money fund filter to look at different fund options. You can find it here - https://www.boringmoney.co.uk/funds/

Ultimately, if you want to make your own decisions then it is down to you to read through everything and come to a conclusion.

Alternatively, you could speak to a Financial Adviser who will do all of this for you, in exchange for a fee.

I hope that helps!
