I have invested in a number of stocks and shares
Question by Andrew
I have invested in a number of stocks and shares ISAs and would like to be assured that I would not lose any of the investment say in my 'Vanguard Global Equity Fund' should Vanguard go bust. Obviously, I take the risk if the fund performs badly, but my confusion comes from reading that should the ISA fund company (eg Vanguard) go bust, my investment is only protected by the FCA up to the value of £85k? I would appreciate your clarification on this. Thanks.

The FSCS advice is right. While there is the risk of the value of the Global Equity fund you are invested in to go up and down, if Vanguard 'goes bust' your money is only protected up to £85,000. Meaning the government only guarantees your money up to £85,000. Like with a bank account your money is only guaranteed up to that limit per banking group.
However, in reality with a stocks and shares ISA you would still have shares in the underlying companies of the fund so your money wouldn't vanish into thin air and someone would take over the management of the investment funds and the ISAs. Vanguard is one of the largest asset managers in the world managing over 7 trillion US dollars. Its main business is managing index funds. It also has the advantage of being mutually owned by the people who invest in Vanguard funds.
