Is it possible to have a flexible stocks and shares ISA? If you take money out is there a time limit for when it must be repaid?

Answered by Boring Money

Hi Anthony,

The short answer is yes – it is possible to have a flexible Stocks & Shares ISA and there is a time limit.

Firstly, it's worth checking with your provider whether your ISA is flexible, as this isn't something all providers offer. For example, IG, Freetrade and Bestinvest offers a flexible Stocks & Shares ISA, but interactive investor and AJ Bell do not.

Flexible ISAs allow you to withdraw money and put it back in again within the same tax year (6th April 2026 – 5th April 2027) without eating into your £20,000 annual allowance. You can also only replace the exact amount you withdrew.

Say you pay £15,000 into a flexible ISA in June 2026. If you later withdraw £5,000 in January 2027, you can pay that £5,000 back in before 5th April 2027 without it counting against your annual allowance.

Hope this helps!
